Postumus, Romano-Gallic Emperor, 260-269. Double Sestertius (Orichalcum, 32 mm, 18.88 g, 7 h), uncertain mint ('Atelier II'), circa 261-263. Flan crack and with some weakness and traces of overstriking, otherwise, very fine.



Postumus had many of his double sestertii and sestertii overstruck on earlier coins, particularly those from the Nerva-Antonine dynasty. On our specimen, the undertype is only faintly discernible: on the obverse, an 'A' is visible at 2 o’clock, while the reverse shows an 'N' around 2-3 o’clock, along with the 'C' of 'S - C' and traces of drapery. Unfortunately, these remnants are too fragmentary for a reliable identification. Nonetheless, the fabric and style of the flan are consistent with an Antonine origin.
